LENS Neurofeedback Therapy-Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will I need?
The average number of sessions for most patients is 10-20. This is largely dependent on background history and condition severity which varies for every individual. For example, general anxiety can be addressed in as little as two sessions, while most autistic and recovering stroke patients require a considerable amount more sessions. A finite number of sessions is required for each patient to achieve lasting change.
How long does each session last?
The first session takes about an hour. We discuss basic medical history and background information with the patient, and central nervous system and sensitivity questionnaires are provided to be filled out prior to the first session. All follow up sessions take between 20–30 minutes.
What will I feel during a session?
Some patients may feel stimulated. Some become relaxed or even tired. While others may feel focused or a bit spacey. While these reactions are temporary and may only last a few minutes to an hour. They indicate that the client is sensitive to the signal and the treatment was successful. Generally, most patients feel relaxed, calm and focused, both during and after a session.
How safe is LENS neurofeedback therapy?
LENS therapy has been around for more than 30 years and is used on more than one million patients with no known enduring negative side effects. There have been over 14 million sessions to date in 30 countries. LENS is very easy on the body and brain. LENS is NOT intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease or condition. Rather, it is involved with helping the body to reduce anxiety brought on by trauma and stress. In doing so brings about a natural way to manage symptoms associated with many chronic mental health issues.
It is an FDA-certified Class II Device and 510-K exempt. This type of medical device exemption classification is a less restrictive certification. This means that the FDA approves this device as safer than most of the other biofeedback and neurofeedback devices used today.
Can LENS neurofeedback therapy harm good brainwaves?
No, it cannot. The computer software and signal works to disrupt and reset only the frozen, rigid and looping brainwaves to become more flexible, like your healthy ones. It encourages stronger neural connectivity over time by influencing only the physiology that perpetuates the dysfunction to adapt to new information. The healthy brainwaves are already flexible and easily bounce back. Over time it will recalibrate the central nervous system to communicate better with itself.
What can LENS neurofeedback therapy help with?
Anxiety—Too much contained energy, restlessness, rumination, difficulty breathing, palpitations, distractibility, tremor exacerbation, sleep disturbances. LENS is proven to be one of the best natural remedies for the symptoms of anxiety.
Addictions/Dependencies—Defensiveness, argumentativeness, cynicism.
Cognition—Problems sequencing, clarity, memory, providing and maintaining attention, concentration and organization.
Fatigue—Due to the stresses of an illness or overcoming impediment of an above condition.
Pain—Brain generated pain and vascular pain.
Reactivity—Hypersensitivity, hyper-reactivity, multiple chemical sensitivities.
Mood—Anger, sadness, explosiveness
Motor—Balance, hand–eye coordination, tremor, strength and muscle tone from spasticity, dizziness.
Motivation—Difficulty starting or completing tasks, shifting from one to another.
Performance Optimization—Increase function in the above areas in absence of any diagnosis.
The majority of our patients require treatment for anxiety, ADD/ADHD, anger, explosive emotional behavior, depression, TBI (concussion), post traumatic stress, migraine and headaches, peak performance, bi-polar disorder, focus concentration, motivation/procrastination issues, age-related cognitive degeneration, learning disabilities and insomnia.
What is the overall success rate?
Our current success rate is about 85% for most conditions, from which patients report reduced problematic symptoms. We hold a 90% improvement rate for the symptoms associated with anxiety, headaches, TBI and ADD/ADHD.
Is LENS neurofeedback therapy covered by medical insurance?
LENS neurofeedback is considered a biofeedback therapy service—please contact your insurance company to inquire regarding coverage. Most patients prefer to pay out of pocket. NeuroBalance is budget friendly; please contact us for information regarding payment plans. We make it easier to deal with this concern by emailing a monthly super bill receipt with all the important information your insurance provider requires.
How long until I see results?
Results are dependent on the individual’s nervous system—on average, most patients report feeling changes after one to five sessions. LENS is considered to be the fastest in getting results when compared to all other “training” neurofeedback systems.
Does LENS neurofeedback therapy work well on children?
Yes, LENS is equally successful with children. Many of our young patients want help with: ADD/ADHD, anxiety, anger, impulsivity and explosive behavior, with positive, lasting results. These sessions are relatively short which make it easier for children to sit through.
Can you work with people on medication?
Yes, we commonly work with clients on a regular basis that take all types of medication. Many even reduce their dosages or stop taking medication altogether after successful LENS therapy treatments and consulting with their doctor.
How often do I have to schedule LENS neurofeedback therapy treatments?
We strive for as much improvement as possible initially, and prefer to see new patients twice a week until we begin to see positive changes. When we feel this has been established, we can progress: once a week treatments, once every ten days, and subsequently once every two weeks—eventually achieving treatments once every three to four weeks. When the patient is generally stable then we recommend “touch up” sessions on an “as-needed basis”.
