Parents are given an enormous amount of advice about doing things correctly, and comparatively little about doing them consistently. The developmental evidence points the other way round. A child’s brain is fundamentally a prediction machine, and what it most needs from an environment is not that the environment be optimal but that it be forecastable — because a forecastable environment is one that requires less vigilance.
Why Does Predictability Matter Neurologically?

Because prediction determines how much of a child’s limited capacity has to go to monitoring. A brain that can anticipate what comes next can allocate resources to learning, play and regulation. A brain that cannot has to stay alert.
Vigilance is expensive, and in a developing brain it competes directly with development. Capacity spent tracking whether the environment is about to change is capacity not spent on the executive function and self-regulation skills that childhood is supposed to build.

Not rigid, and this is the most common misreading. Predictability is not a fixed schedule enforced regardless of circumstances — families with rigid routines and volatile emotional climates are not providing it.
What matters is that the important things are reliable. That the sequence of the day is broadly recognisable. That the response to a given behaviour is reasonably consistent rather than depending on adult mood. That adults do roughly what they said they would do.
That last one carries more weight than parents usually realise. A child predicting adult behaviour is building a model of how the world works, and inconsistency between statement and action degrades the model more than an unwelcome but reliable rule does.
Emotional predictability matters most of all. A child can adapt to a strict parent or a relaxed one. Adapting to a parent whose response to the same event varies unpredictably is much harder, because no model can be built.
Doesn't This Make Children Fragile?
The opposite, on the evidence. Predictability is what makes managed challenge tolerable.
A child with a reliable base has capacity available for difficulty — they can attempt something hard, fail, and recover, because the background is stable. A child already spending capacity on monitoring an unpredictable environment has much less spare for challenge.

Every parent loses their temper, breaks a promise, and responds badly while tired. The developmental question is not whether that happens — it happens in every family — but what follows it.
Repair after rupture appears to be more valuable than an unbroken record would be, and the reason is mechanical. A child who only ever experiences smooth interaction learns nothing about what to do when things go wrong. A child who experiences rupture followed by reliable repair learns that difficulty is survivable, that relationships withstand conflict, and that adults take responsibility.
Repair is straightforward and does not require elaborate apology: acknowledging what happened, taking responsibility without excessive self-criticism, and re-establishing connection. What makes it work is that it reliably follows — which is predictability operating at the level of the relationship.
What Happens Without It?
Sustained unpredictability keeps a child’s stress response engaged, and chronic activation has developmental consequences. Early life stress is associated with reduced hippocampal volume, and reduced hippocampal volume contributes to cognitive deficits and emotional dysregulation in people with histories of early adversity.
That is a serious finding and it needs careful framing. It describes sustained, significant adversity — not an inconsistent bedtime or a stressful few months.
